Sounds Jamaica - Red Hot Reggae (Chevron Records)

2/10/2013

So this cassette is a collection of classic/well known reggae tracks done by a cover band named "Sounds Jamaica". Nothing too strange there really. Most of them are covered pretty well and a few are pretty cheezy. I just wanna know why the hell Chevron, the huge oil and gas company was releasing this stuff? This is a UK release so maybe when you filled your car up with petrol you got a free cassette????

And it's a total drag that I can't order the Pulsonic automatic disco light!!!

They released this to sell at their gas stations, so people not just buy petrol but also a nice cassette to listen on their journey. A lot of oil companies released cheesy sets and easy listening music like this one.

Mozart or Bach doesn't sell well to the average truck driver or family on their Sunday out to the beach (no disrespect) so that explains those sets in terms of taste..

Chevron were a UK based budget label. During the 70s and 80s they released numerous soundalike albums - many released only on cassette. These albums were sold only in the chain store Woolworths.

That rendition of "Everything I Own" is identical to the one featured on the UK soundalike LP Top Of The Pops Volume 41. These were somehow popular with the buying public!
